More Information
William will speak of Hillier’s history, from 19th century floristry to 21st century tree growing, and give some insight into its work and processes, centred around a 200-acre farm in Liss where 250,000 trees are grown annually across 150 species with strict attention to long-term sustainability and biosecurity.
In particular, William will focus on preparations for the future. As climate change intensifies, urban trees face mounting urban and environmental stresses, from extreme temperatures and unpredictable weather to pollution and compacted soils. Through extensive research and collaboration with experts, Hillier is at the forefront of developing and supplying resilient tree species that are tailored to withstand the challenges.
The talk will help all of us learn about the journey of our trees from field to street and to understand the increasing difficulties they face in our urban environments. It will be of particular use to local sponsors and volunteers, especially those in the process of choosing trees for their roads, as Street Trees for Living works to help everyone involved in tree planting make an informed shift towards more suitable and sustainable species.
